![]() ![]() Thankfully, the gameplay is much, much better. The plot does kind of come together later on, but every story section starts with minutes of the characters chattering at each other before you go into another mission and, surprise, you have to fight another team of three mercenaries while listening to the characters be stunned that the thing that’s happened a dozen times happened again. It’s all a bit of a mess, if that isn’t already clear. On top of that, organizations are fighting over control of the Oval, adding vague factions to the smaller, less vague factions. The game just kind of doesn’t care if you know what’s going on or not. These outfits are not established beforehand, nor are most of the characters introduced. These mercenaries work for several different outfits. You create a character who is immediately thrust into combat operations with a large roster of mercenaries. I didn’t even intend to make Samus, honest. The game takes place in a region known as the Oval that is rich with femto, a material carried in chunks of the moon. The moon has fallen and brought with it corruption that turns certain AIs against humanity. It begins by showing a moon colliding with a planet and thrusts you into a post-apocalyptic scenario dominated by archetypes with tons of different hair colors. Who are all these people?ĭaemon X Machina is not up front about what exactly is going on with its story or why anyone should care. While the story might get pretty annoying and there’s a distinct lack of originality on display, Daemon X Machina is a fast, fun mecha game that will likely please anyone looking for a bit of a throwback. Thankfully, this time it’s also a better game with a really solid port to boot. have seen fit to once again port a Switch game. Luckily, though, just like with Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, XSEED and Marvelous Inc. As a fan of the subgenre, that annoyed me. Daemon X Machina was originally released in September of last year exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. Nowadays, though, we don’t see them all too often. For a while, you couldn’t blink without seeing a new Gundam or Armored Core game based around outfitting a mech with new parts and taking it on a mission. That metaphorical consistency is very important for building a good UI, but products these days have gotten so complex that most of them lose it.Ģ. ![]() On early Mac versions, the Finder "was" your files, it wasn't just "a browser for" your files. It preserves the metaphor of your desktop being a place where you can directly manipulate your files and folders. (To be fair, the one company that's tried the "great, let's make a great product, kill off the competition, and then hold it there and reassign all the people" was Microsoft with IE6, and that worked fine up until Firefox and Chrome came around and then completely screwed them over.)ġ. It's like up till then you have room to improve, and then suddenly you've hit the pinnacle of product design in your category, but rather than hold it there, you have to make random changes so your employees have something to do and don't quit. There seems to be this phenomenom where good products seems to get better right up until they get mainstream adoption, and then they steadily get worse. It seemed to hit the sweet spot where you could do just about everything you needed to easily (it had collapsible tree views, folders, computed folder sizes, drag & drop, copy & paste, labels, etc.), but it didn't try to hide things from you or restrict what you could do, it didn't get too fancy and guess at your common tasks, it actually showed your filesystem instead of Apple's prescribed guess at what your filesystem should do, and it was still simple enough that you could wrap your head around exactly how it worked. ![]() When it comes to look and feel, "It's better to look good than to feel good!" The frustration is that unlike them, Apple could do so much better, but ever since the candy-colored iMacs, they've decided that Fernando (Billy Crystal's old SNL character) was right. And yet the rest of the industry is so fragmented that they don't do any better in terms of usability. Now, it's all about the style, about how the edges look in fashion magazines. Can't you work on this, Apple? "Thinner!"Īpple used to emphasize software quality and usability. Or, the apps get worse, not better, over time, and you always have to ask yourself whether each free OS upgrade is worth the risk of unreliable WiFi. Don't you realize how critically important that is?" Or a yearning for more battery life, or even just a swappable battery? "The bottom of our laptop looks better than the top of theirs!" Or, why is the text on my iPhone suddenly so low contrast and hard to read? "Surely you agree that having a fresh look matters more than readability! Look, the icons are flat. Surely you agree that the appearance of a thin edge is more important than usability of Finder or connectors." I mean this more metaphorically than literally, but I'm so tired of complaints about the ridiculously primitive Finder being met with, "the edge of the iMac now appears even thinner, now that we've repositioned formerly convenient connectors and such into a bulge behind the screen. Because you can't really tell how well software is working when looking at the device edge-on, and that's apparently the way Apple looks at them most of the time. ![]()

I’m not making that last part up - it’s the developer’s sense of humor at work. While the player’s doing all this rushing around, the most bizarre thing happens: the fairy godmother, observing from somewhere offscreen, randomizes the player character’s costume and offensive abilities every time he collects a muffin! One moment he’ll be slinging arrows as the eponymous Muffin Knight the next he may be a Unicorn laying rainbow turds that explode once enemies step on them. Muffin Knight‘s levels are played essentially infinitely, but Angry Mob Games instills a nice sense of progression by letting the player unlock new levels and character classes as collection goals are satisfied.Īnd it’s the character class changing that will go down as Muffin Knight‘s most memorable gameplay element. If they manage to filter all the way through to the pit sitting at the bottom of a level, they’ll drop back in and thread their way through twice as fast, making it that much more difficult for the player to avoid them when they come around again. Failing to dispatch enemies exacts a penalty. The player’s job is to rush around collecting muffins that appear in random locations, making sure to destroy or at least avoid enemies that drop in to crash his gathering spree. Muffin Knight contains six platforming arenas slightly larger than one screen each. Buckles have been made in West Haven since 1853. Sometimes, the app runs in the background, using an inconsiderate amount of CPU resources when you check your Activity Monitor. So it can get really annoying when you keep getting random ‘Required Data Notice’ notifications from a mysterious Microsoft AutoUpdate app. Why and When Should You Delete Microsoft AutoUpdateĪlthough Microsoft AutoUpdate is an app in itself, you won’t find it in your Mac’s Launchpad or Applications folder. So, when that random glitch you experienced using a Microsoft app suddenly goes away after some time, Microsoft AutoUpdate probably installed an update (in the background) that eliminated the issue. Have you ever launched a Microsoft app and found that it already had a newly-released feature? The Microsoft AutoUpdate software did that. The Microsoft AutoUpdate has one job: to automatically update Microsoft apps on your Mac and make sure they stay updated. If your fix works with the guest account, it’d be great to know, though? And possibly the gurus – who are genuinely kind enough to do their best to shield us from this type of nonsense – maybe they can be more clear with us about what data we’re expected to be forced to release to Microsoft in exchange for having installed their wondrous product? □Īnd I’m not even paranoid. If you have any app developed by Microsoft (think: OneNote, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Edge, etc.) installed on your Mac, then you most definitely have Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) sitting somewhere on your device as well. Thanks very much for this resource, as otherwise I’d have had no idea at all how to even possibly stop that nonsense. Given I tap into the Guest account quite frequently, it actually would take less time for me to just quickly reinstall the software should I ever need it again □Īnd my apologies if this is beyond the scope here. I also truly don’t comprehend what “data” Microsoft wishes to mine that apparently legally requires a “Required Data Notice”, or why they’d cause it to run the CPU at 100% just to display their goofy notice and force users to accept it? All just a bit too Orwellian for me □ I got so annoyed with it that I just yanked Office.
